Out Of Peru designers only buy minerals and silver from formal mining sources
Whilst at Out Of Peru we recognise that mining can have a negative impact on the environment our designers’ only source their materials directly from the formal mines. We do not believe it is realistic to expect consumers to boycott mining altogether as Peru’s economic development relies on silver mining. Silver accounts for 8% of annual exports. It is Out Of Peru’s policy only to work with designers whose materials we know are coming from mines that are operating within the strict environmental and ethical guidelines imposed by the Peruvian Government.
Yanacocha and Antamina are the two biggest formal mines where metals are mined with the strictest ethical standards. Buenaventura, Peru’s biggest precious metal mining company operates 6 mines including Yanacocha. It has obtained or is working towards obtaining the globally recognized ISO 14001 environmental certification for all of its mines. Buenaventura also states in its CSR report that it has contributed to much needed public infrastructure development. It has benefited 107 villages in mining communities through the construction of four hospitals, four schools, roads, transmission lines and other essential infrastructure.
