• Silver and The Peruvian Economy

    Silver Mining

In 2009 Peru produced 123.9m ounces of silver which equates to over 17% of the world’s total production making it the largest silver producing country. Silver accounts for 8% of Peru’s annual exports. However, the majority of the silver is exported as a raw material which means the local people are not benefiting from their countries vast resource wealth.

Importance and development of an ethical and transparent Peruvian Jewellery Industry

In the first quarter of 2010 Peruvian jewellery exports reached almost US$10mn - a 34% increase on 2009. Despite the  fact that Peru is the largest producer of silver, sterling silver jewellery exports remain proportionally low in comparison to the raw material exports.

Developing the Peruvian sterling silver jewellery industry is becoming an increasingly important part of the effort to create a prosperous sustainable and developed economy in Peru resulting in increased jobs for the local people and ensuring they receive the full benefits of their country’s natural wealth.

In 2010 the World Jewellery Federation (CIBJO) signed an agreement with the Peruvian Government to establish  training programmes designed to improve the skills and efficiencies of the 12,000 Peruvian jewellery artisans – an important step  towards creating a long term sustainable, responsible and ethical jewellery industry in Peru,   Two of the regions included in this programme are  Cajamarca and Lima – the 2 areas where Out Of Peru sources its sterling silver jewellery.
